The Mind-Body Problem:
a Personal Philosophy
The Mind-Body Problem: A Personal Philosophy is a multimedia solo performance that investigates the dynamic relationship between the mind and body. Through five interflowing stages—Body Isolation, Mind Overtakes Body, Mind Isolation, Body Overtakes Mind, and Equilibrium—the piece portrays a cycle in the struggle for personal balance, influenced by external forces such as anxiety, meditation, and sexual stimulation.
Utilizing gyroscopic sensors, contact- and stethoscopic- microphones, video, pre-recorded vocal narrative and interactive sound design, the performance gives voice to both mind and body, revealing their dialogue and tension. The work invites the audience to witness the boundaries and intersections of the physical and mental realms, culminating in a desire for equilibrium as an unattainable yet ever-present aspiration.
The performance relies on various different methods of data extraction from sound, vibration, movement and bio signals in live interaction with video, lights and machinery to give an amplified voice to the mind and body during their dialogue, and to further reveal the tension between the two.
Through the piece, the audience is presented with a personal path towards a seemingly unattainable equilibrium, where each spectator is responsible as to whether they ultimately extract a greater and more general truth from the context.
