Vaughn Avery Pumpfrey wanders through the Arctic ice, dragging a wooden crate of fine china and silverware. He is the last survivor of a shipwreck. He keeps these possessions in hopes of engaging in trade with locals, but he finds nobody. He and his company had set out in search of Thule, a fabled northern land believed to grow more distant by looking for it. Writing in his diary, we learn that he still believes, despite his destitute, that he may be close.
Beginning to hallucinate, he begins to encounter strange creatures and people who, he is sure, are the people of Thule.
